The first five,000 E.T. dolls - 8-inch-long, slightly potbellied, brown vinyl models of the extra-terrestrial in this summer's virtually successful motion moving-picture show - will reach Macy'due south, Saks, F.A.O. Schwarz and other stores this week.
The handmade toys with their dangling arms and legs and quizzical oversized black plastic optics are a trickle that will soon become a flood. J.C. Penney alone has ordered nearly 250,000 of the dolls and is now deciding whether to wing in its shipment of Due east.T.'s from Taiwan, where they are being manufactured. The airlifted dolls would reach Penney shelves four weeks earlier than toys sent by ship.
By Christmas Day, Kamar International, the California toy visitor that designed and is manufacturing five or half dozen versions of the stuffed toy, expects to do $xl one thousand thousand in business organization past selling half dozen million toys ranging in price from $v to $twenty. ''And we'll lose $10 million or $12 million because nosotros didn't have it in the market place when the movie came out,'' said Astrid Kamar, who founded Kamar with her husband, Pascal (P.K.) Kamar, 23 years ago. A Commencement for Kamar
Kamar, which is a afar second to Dakin in the blimp-animal field, has never made a toy under a licensing agreement before. How did a small family-owned visitor get the licensing rights to the title character of a movie that has already earned $115 million and is averaging more than than $3 million worth of ticket sales every day?
''Nosotros wanted a creature that was warm, cuddly and lovable,'' said Steve Adler, vice president of merchandising at MCA Inc., the parent company of Universal Pictures, which fabricated ''Eastward.T. the Actress-Terrestrial.'' ''So I took my 8-yr-old son, Evan, and my 11-yearold daughter, Melanie, to some toy stores and told them to choice the plush toys they liked best. They keyed in on Kamar's Monkey-Do.''
At outset, according to Mrs. Kamar, her husband, who designs all Kamar toys, was not interested. ''But the character was so ugly, P.Yard. was intrigued by the claiming of making it into a lovable toy,'' she added.
Designing E.T. was not the only challenge. Steven Spielberg, the creator and director of the movie, was determined that no information nearly the title character be released before the pic reached theaters on June 11. Colour slides and drawings of the lonely visitor from outer space were kept under lock and key, and Mr. Kamar was allowed to await at the artwork but non take it away with him. Forced to Sit Tight
After his design was accepted early on in March, he had null to do but sit tight until June 12. Mrs. Kamar ordered 50,000 yards of fabric and lined upwards a manufacturing plant in Taiwan. In April, she flew one woman in from Taiwan whom she taught how to make standing and sitting versions of E.T. and how to oversee quality control. According to Mr. Adler, Mr. Spielberg, who personally approved every licensee, was insistent that every E.T. product accept ''showtime-form quality.''
Since ''Eastward.T.'due south'' astounding box-office success, Kamar has added another 30 factories in Taiwan, Korea and the Philippines and has created an Due east.T. made out of nylon tricot, an Due east.T. puppet, and ii soft plush East.T.'south. It will be mid-Baronial before quantities of the toys will be available.
But already the telephone at Kamar International in Torrance, Calif., is answered, ''Home of East.T.''
